Description
Old stone walls with their accompanying "witness trees" are a common sight in Vermont. Stone walls could be moved, changing property boundaries but trees could not be moved hence they served as "witnesses" to the property boundaries.
This is a small ( 6" x 12") oil study for a larger painting. This is typical of the way I work. I may complete a dozen or more small studies of a particular subject or theme and choose the one that I feel would look the best to have as a larger work in the same proportions. Sugar maple trees were the tree of choice as they produced the sap from which maple syrup is made.
