Artist's Description

Ruins of the Cherokee Gold Asayer's Office in Cherokee California. This building, along with many empty cellar holes, are all that is left of a town that once had over 1000 residents. In the late 1800's, the gold mining town of Cherokee had 2 churches, 2 schools, 17 saloons and 8 hotels. The town also had a theater, racetrack and a brewery. Millions of dollars in gold passed though this building from the most technologically advanced hydraulic mining operation of its time that blasted away an entire mountain for it's gold and the first diamonds discovered in North America. The massive, stone block, gold vault can be seen in the far left corner of the ruins.
