This painting has a smooth surface with no discernible brush strokes. The painting was built up with multiple layers of thin transparent oil colors over a care drawing in charcoal. This labor intensive, "Old Masters" technique gives a beautiful and soft luminosity to the painting that would be difficult, if not impossible to achieve by other painting techniques.
