Description
"GOLD POND" is just down our road a bit. Formed around 1875 when the Spring Valley Mining Company expanded their operations and started washing away this hill with water cannons called monitors.
It is estimated that over $15,000,000 dollars in gold was recovered in this district, mostly from the Spring Valley Mine. That's when gold was only $21.25 an ounce compared to today's value of $1,657.00 an ounce! That value of 15 million would be worth over 7,798 times as much in today's market!
An estimated 400 large, gem grade diamonds were also found by washing away the hills. Hydraulic mining was banned by federal law in 1884 because of the terrible damage it did to streams and rivers filling them with silt and killing off the salmon industry.
