Description
I photographed this very rare Circumzenithal Arc about 2:00 Am in the afternoon on May 13, 2015 in Butte County, California
A Circumzenithal Arc is an optical phenomenon similar in appearance to a rainbow, but it belongs to the family of halos arising from refraction of sunlight through ice crystals, in cirrus or cirro-stratus clouds, rather than from raindrops. It forms no more than one-quarter of a circle centered on the zenith and on the same side of the sky as the sun. Its colors are from blue on the inside to red on the outside of the arc. It is one of the brightest and most colorful halos. It's colors are purer and intense than those of the rainbow because there is much less color overlap in its formation. This particular Circumzenithal Arc is the largest and most brilliant I have ever seen. Glad that I had my Nikon Camera with me! Shot with a 70 mm lens.
