Description
This inverted rainbow-like phenomenon takes the United Airlines Slogan "Fly The Friendly Skies" to a new level! I photographed this very rare Circumzenithal Arc about 2:00 AM in the afternoon on September 3rd, 2015 over the Pacific Ocean at an altitude of 38,000 feet.
A Circumzenithal Arc is an optical phenomenon similar in appearance to a rainbow, but it belongs to the family of halos arising from refraction of sunlight through ice crystals, in cirrus or cirro-stratus clouds, rather than from raindrops. It forms no more than one-quarter of a circle centered on the zenith and on the same side of the sky as the sun. Its colors are from blue on the inside to red on the outside of the arc. It is one of the brightest and most colorful halos. It's colors are purer and intense than those of the rainbow because there is much less color overlap in its formation.
Shot with an 18 mm lens at F9, 1/800 sec ISO 200.
